The history of boating on Lake Tahoe extends back to the middle of the 1800’s. A big part of Lake Tahoe’s boating tradition lies within the history of power boating. Sleek mahogany speedboat had been cruising the waters of Lake Tahoe since the early 1920s and it was not until the 1970’s that a small group of what boat enthusiasts recognized the need to preserve these wooden treasures. Throughout the 1970s, a series of informal wood boat shows were held at Chambers Landing, Lake Tahoe. From these gatherings there was an increased interest in the restoration, history and preservation of these old wooden boats. In 1983, several Lake Tahoe residents formed what is now the Northern California / Lake Tahoe Chapter of the Antique and Classic Boats Society, Inc.

This year is the first South Lake Tahoe Wooden Boat Classic boat show and it did not disappoint. It was a true treat to see these antique boats, up close and personal. The shiny chrome, deep mahogany wood and aged leather seats made you realize you are experiencing a part of history. The proud owners of these fine crafts, were there in person to share their stories with the curious and somewhat jealous public. One of the most popular boats was the Thunderbird Cruiser who’s famous Lake Tahoe owner was that of the Thunderbird Lodge, George Whittell. A 55′ mahogany and stainless steel commuter designed by John hacker in 1939.

What a wonderful setting Lake Tahoe offers as a beautiful backdrop. The three-day event was full of fun get-togethers, food, wine and awards.

The judged boats are eligible for the following Perpetual Trophies based on scored points: Overall Best of Show Restored, Overall Best of Show, Preserved, Best Century, Best Chris Craft, Best Garwood, Best Hacker Craft, Best Riva

All boats are eligible for the following Perpetual Trophies that will be awarded on a subjective basis: Farthest Traveled, Peoples Choice, Ladies Choice, Skippers Choice, Best Owner Restored, Oldest Boat, Most Elegant, Most Original

If you love boats, take the time to drive to Homewood, on Lake Tahoe’s West Shore, where you will discover the Lake Tahoe Maritime Museum. It’s mission is “to stimulate an interest in and an understanding of Lake Tahoe’s rich maritime history through the highest standards of historic preservation, innovative interpretation and public education.” The Tahoe Maritime Museum’s boat collection rivals many maritime museums across the U.S. Currently there are over 25 vessels which are historically significant not only to Lake Tahoe, but to the maritime community in general.
